Children across the Commonwealth may have just begun their summer vacations, but we are already gearing up for the new school year! Every year in the late summer and early fall, community groups, schools, health care providers, and other advocates work to educate the public about low-cost health insurance for children. This national project is called the Back-to-School campaign, and Massachusetts has a strong history of effective annual efforts. The Back-to-School campaign is coordinated by the Covering Kids and Families Initiative at Health Care For All, and for the second year Watch Your Mouth is an active partner in this exciting project. Access to insurance often determines access to oral health care, and communities must improve both to ensure children's overall health and success in school.
If you participated in Back-to-School last year, we hope you will join us once again. If you are new to the campaign, we invite you to learn more and get involved. You can get free and colorful outreach materials about insurance and children's oral health, templates for media outreach such as press releases and letters-to-the-editor, and technical assistance planning outreach events. Please contact Michaela Lincoln at 617-275-2937 or mlincoln@hcfama.org to sign up! You can also learn more about the national campaign at www.coveringkidsandfamilies.org.
The Community Coalition of MetroWest honored local legislators and community heroes this month for their dedication to advancing the oral health of the Commonwealth.
The Surgeon General has declared that "oral health is essential to the general health and well-being of all Americans." For most Americans, oral health status has improved between 1988–1994 and 1999–2004, but for youths aged 2–5 years, dental caries in primary teeth has increased. Read the report in PDF format.
